Professional footballers at the top level are certainly rewarded handsomely in their pay packets, and now most appear to be actually increasing their wealth during the economic downturn. The 2007-08 season was excellent for Manchester United as it saw the club crowned both English and European champions. According to research from Deloitte, this success was translated into financial gain as the club recorded increases across all revenue streams of 21 per cent, rising £45 million to £257.1 million.
Broadcasting revenues increased 44 per cent to £91.6 million, £49.3 million of which was generated from the club’s share of the Premier League’s broadcasting deals commencing in 2007-08. United’s payments from the League were up 54 per cent on the previous year.
