The Soccer Saturday presenter is reported to be set to replace Des O’Connor on the quiz show.

Stelling, 52, was linked to the show in 2005 following the death of Richard Whiteley but bosses chose Des Lynam because he had a higher profile.

O’Connor then took over but left this year, as did Countdown legend Vorderman.

Stelling, who also writes a Saturday football column, was reported in The Sun as being excited about his possible new role. However, the paper said he will not be giving up his job on Soccer Saturday.

Stelling, who is a supporter of Hartlepool Utd, is renowned for his quips on the Sky football show.
