Women’s soccer is making its return to Philadelphia. Team officials unveiled the name of the new franchise in a ceremony at the Franklin Institute, Monday evening.
The “Philadelphia Independence” will be the eighth franchise in Women’s Professional Soccer — or WPS — and they’ll begin play in spring, 2010, at the new stadium in Chester.

Major League Soccer Philadelphia 2010 has named Thomas Veit as President of Keystone Sports and Entertainment, the ownership group of MLS Philadelphia 2010. Veit is an accomplished sports and entertainment veteran and will oversee all business matters relating to the new Philadelphia Major League Soccer team and the under-construction stadium in Chester, Pa.
Veit will report directly to Nick Sakiewicz, CEO & Operating Partner of Keystone Sports & Entertainment.
Women’s Professional Soccer, which begins its inaugural season later this month, will announce Tuesday that Philadelphia has been approved for an eighth franchise and will begin play in the 2010 season.
The team is expected to play in the stadium in Chester, Pa., which will also be the home for the Philadelphia MLS franchise that begins play in 2010.

Keystone Sports and Entertainment, LLC, the MLS Philadelphia 2010 ownership group, named Panasonic as the “Official Technology Partner” of its new stadium and waterfront complex.
When the new MLS stadium and waterfront complex opens in 2010 just south of Philadelphia, it will be “Powered by Panasonic” with Panasonic as exclusive provider of broadcast and TV production systems, large screen LED displays, security systems and point-of-sale systems. Panasonic’s participation in the project will be reflected throughout the venue with stadium marks and logos in addition to branding on the main scoreboard and the LED signage.
