Soccer fan is getting shirty

A Norwegian footballer was due to cycle through Sheffield United’s ground today to ride away with a signed Blades football shirt for an international charity campaign.

Bjorn Heidenstrom is cycling from Oslo to South Africa, collecting shirts from clubs along the way.

They will be sewn together to create the world’s largest signed football shirt to wave in the wind at next year’s World Cup in South Africa.

At the center of more than 1,500 Freehold families at Opatut Park on Saturday were Scott, Annie, and Paige Preston, family of Graeme Preston-killed in a car accident last year at the age of 12- founders of the memorial Graeme Preston Foundation for Life, and pillars in the Freehold community.

Charity soccer match featuring Zinedine Zidane postponed to July 12

A back injury will prevent soccer legend Zinedine Zidane from playing a charity soccer match Saturday in Vancouver, but the game has been rescheduled for July 12.

The game will be played at a different venue and will lack some of the players that appeared in previous matches in Toronto and Montreal, promoter Ahcene Adlani said Friday.

Prince Charles Attends Christianity v. Islam Soccer Match

In the end it was the Hand of God that saved the Christians.

As Prince Charles, who would like one day to style himself Defender of Faith, moved towards the sidelines of the Christianity vs. Islam soccer tournament, the big German vicar Heribert Süttmann just managed to get his keeper’s glove to the ball and save the honor of the West.

Rotary Club Soccer Classic on tap next weekend

The 25th annual Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant Soccer Classic will be held Saturday at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island.

More than 30 teams will participate in the tournament, which is sponsored by Regions Bank. Teams from Academic Magnet, Ashley Hall, Ashley Ridge, Berkeley, Bishop England, Burke, Coastal Christian, Colleton County, First Baptist, Fort Dorchester, Goose Creek, Hanahan, North Charleston, Pinewood Prep, Porter-Gaud, Stratford, Summerville, Wando and West Ashley will compete. The first match is at 7 a.m. and the event will conclude at approximately 7 p.m. Each match will last 40 minutes.

Admission is $3, and children wearing soccer jerseys will get in free.
